LEATHERWORKING TOOLS

Choose Cutting and Skiving Tools

Choose between a line cut, a strip and a thinning job

A knife follows the cut you control, a strap cutter references a repeated strip width, and a skiver removes material to thin an area. These jobs can appear in the same project without making the tools interchangeable. Decide which operation is awkward with your present setup before adding another cutting shape.

The Small CBHGFEA round knife provides a rounded high-carbon-steel cutting edge with an ebony handle and a storage box. It is one small knife; the Large and Small+Large choices are separate selections. It offers a freehand cutting/skiving form rather than an adjustable strip-width guide. A numerical blade width is not provided, so Small is a selection name rather than a measurement to compare with a known cutting span.

For strips, compare width guidance with how the tool is held

Craftool 3080-00 is a handheld adjustable-guide strap cutter. Tandy identifies a four-inch maximum strip width and one supplied blade for that exact model. Its replaceable blade is an additional purchasing consideration: the specified model and refill fit are more useful than assuming any similar-looking blade will work.

WUTA’s clamp-mount strip cutter is a different bench arrangement. Its listing supplies a G-clamp, ten blades and two hex wrenches, and says it can be held by hand or fixed to a table. The seller recommends cutting below 60 mm width in 2–8 mm leather and explicitly excludes soft, thin leather. Those limits belong to this WUTA model. They should not become a general rule for all strap cutters, nor be widened from below 60 mm to an inclusive 60 mm capacity.

Hand skiving gives a shape choice; a splitter adds a feed arrangement

Mudder supplies two differently shaped handheld skivers and six replacement blades in plastic containers. This gives you working-shape and blade-supply choices for paring areas of a project. The larger tool’s overall dimensions do not establish its cutting width, and there is no mechanical stop specified for a chosen finished leather thickness.

DIUDUS Silver-Type C is the more relevant comparison when you want to pull a strip through a manual thinning mechanism. It uses adjustment screws on both sides and comes with ten blades, four screws, two L-keys and instructions. The seller excludes leather wider than 8 cm and notes that very hard or very soft leather can be difficult to handle. A width limit is not a guarantee that every material below that width will thin to one exact result. Choose it for the feed/adjustment arrangement, then use the actual instructions for setup.

Keep blade dimensions, material limits and maintenance separate

Compare a blade’s working shape with the support needed for the task. A clamp included with the WUTA cutter does not establish that it fits every bench edge, and the manual DIUDUS unit is not an electric feeder. Check the selected tools’ actual setup instructions and available bench space before treating either as a drop-in replacement for a handheld knife.

For the Small CBHGFEA high-carbon-steel knife, the seller specifically asks that the blade be kept clean and dry after use. That is useful model-specific care. It does not supply a sharpening angle, and no angle or maintenance procedure should be borrowed from a different knife. Replacement-blade tools likewise need their own blade specification; six or ten spares do not prove compatibility with another holder.

Questions before choosing

Will a strap cutter also reduce leather thickness?

That is not the stated role of these strip cutters. They cut strip width. Compare a handheld skiver or the DIUDUS Type C for thinning.

Can the WUTA cutter handle a 60 mm wide strip?

The seller’s wording is below 60 mm, not up to and including 60 mm. It also specifies its own 2–8 mm leather recommendation and excludes soft, thin leather.

Does the DIUDUS Type C feed the leather automatically?

No. It is manually operated and the material is pulled through by hand. Its side screws adjust the thinning setup.

What is included with the Small CBHGFEA round knife?

One small round-head leather knife and a storage box. The Large and Small+Large variants are separate choices.
