Choose a punch by the shape your design needs: a round adjustment hole, an oval opening, a rectangular slot, or the outside end of a strap. Then compare the actual cutting size and whether you want a revolving plier or separate struck punches. A larger set is useful only if its shapes and sizes suit the project.

A hole and an outside-end cut are different purchases
An oval punch removes an oval opening inside the material; an end punch trims the outer profile. The Boyistar set supplies eight oval openings from 2×6mm to 5×8mm in its listed allocation. WUTA’s selected 5×25mm rectangular punch makes a different slot shape. For the outside end, the square-tail set supplies ten nested dies labeled 15/18/20/25/28/30/32/35/38/40, with working widths and units to confirm. Choose against the intended opening or end outline, rather than the broad word punch.
Choose the operating format around the required sizes
XOOL’s round-hole plier puts six diameters—2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4 and 4.5mm—on one rotating wheel. The eight-piece oval set instead supplies eight individual tools. This is a practical choice between keeping several round sizes on one plier and obtaining the distinct oval profiles of a struck set; six wheel positions are not six separate pliers.
Keep both dimensions of a slot
A 3×8mm oval is not interchangeable with a 3mm round hole, nor is a 5×25mm rectangle described fully by its 5mm side. Compare the fastener or strap arrangement against the complete shape. A hole diameter also does not tell you a fastener’s suitable post length, and a strap-end width does not establish how much thickness the punch can cut.
Check the work support and actual package
Separate punches require the support and striking tools specified for that model; do not count a photographed leather sample or mallet as supplied. Storage can still matter: the Boyistar selection has a plastic box, while the XOOL plier includes a cleaning rod. If you already have the required round size, a distinct slot or end profile is a more useful addition than another similar round-hole package.
Examples in this department
Explore these models to compare their features, included parts and intended uses.
Will a round punch replace an oval or rectangular slot punch?
Only if your design actually calls for a round opening. Compare the complete opening profile and dimensions with the hardware arrangement; a shared small-side measurement does not make the resulting shapes the same.
Does the square-tail photograph show ten complete handled tools?
It shows ten nested cutting dies in different sizes. Their nested presentation saves space in the image; it does not add handles, a press or a supporting board to the purchase.
Can a punch diameter tell me the leather thickness it handles?
No. The hole diameter describes the opening. A material-thickness recommendation must come from the selected tool’s instructions; it cannot be taken from the diameter or from how heavy the punch looks.
Which set should I compare if I need both round and oval openings?
The XOOL Pro round-and-oval plier is a separate choice within this department. Check its exact round range and three oval sizes against your project rather than assuming it has the same six round sizes as the round-only model.
