Compare hole profile, spacing and line preparation
Build the stitching-tool choice around what you want to make in the leather: holes, layout marks or a recessed channel. Within a hole-making family, spacing and prong count are separate decisions. A groover or spacer can complement an iron; it does not automatically replace it.
Compare the actual choices
Compare the job, the working measurement and what the purchase supplies
Tool choice
When to compare it
Measurement or contents that matter
Weaver 4mm diamond set
Several prong counts within one selected spacing
Four complete bodies: 1/2/4/6 prongs
WUTA Obverse 3.85mm pair
A French-slant two-tool arrangement
Two complete irons: 2 and 8 teeth
Craftool Pro groover
A recessed line with an adjustable edge guide
One groover; replaceable in-line blade and small modeling-spoon attachment
Tandy angled lacing chisel
A flat/angled opening for the named lace width
One four-prong tool for 3/32in (2mm) lace; do not relabel that as pitch
Choose the working action before the set size
A stitching chisel forms a row of holes, while the Craftool Pro 88081-00 groover cuts a recessed stitching channel with an in-line blade and adjustable edge guide. Its small modeling-spoon attachment adds a different detail/creasing role. Spacer wheels are another choice for laying out a line. These tools address different preparation steps, so a four-wheel spacer is not a four-chisel set.
Use prong count to compare the working end
Weaver’s selected 4mm diamond set supplies four complete chisels with 1, 2, 4 and 6 prongs. WUTA’s Obverse 3.85mm French pair supplies two tools with 2 and 8 teeth. The shorter head gives a smaller section of holes to place; the longer head covers more positions at once. Decide how that choice suits short sections and straighter runs, while also comparing the different hole profiles.
Keep lace width, tooth spacing and tooth width distinct
Tandy’s four-prong angled lacing chisel is labeled for 3/32-inch (2mm) lace. That is a lace-width designation, not a confirmed 2mm center-to-center spacing. Likewise, a prong’s width is different from the distance between prongs. Compare measurements with the maker’s stated convention; do not derive a stitches-per-inch figure from an unlabeled millimeter number.
Check fixed bodies, replaceable parts and withdrawal aids
A fixed iron pair gives you two complete bodies, whereas an interchangeable system may give one handle and several heads. Some retained WUTA listings also describe variable supplied head versions, which need their own product-page check. Acrylic or steel withdrawal aids help with an existing iron; they do not supply one. Match an aid’s slot and opening to the actual iron before adding it to your bench.

Does a four-piece set give me four stitch spacings?
Not necessarily. The selected Weaver 4mm set gives four prong counts at one selected spacing. Look for a separately stated spacing allocation before expecting several stitch sizes.
Is a groover enough if I still need stitching holes?
The Craftool Pro groover prepares a recessed channel. Choose a documented hole-making tool as well when your sewing method requires holes; the groove itself is not a row of pierced openings.
Can I mix two irons just because their millimeter labels are close?
Compare the exact profile, slant and spacing convention first. A 3.85mm French selection and a 4mm diamond selection are different systems; a close number alone does not establish a matching hole pattern.
Will a withdrawal plate fit every iron?
Fit depends on the plate’s slot/opening and the tool passing through it. The aid is an accessory; where an exact fit chart or slot dimension is absent, confirm the dimensions before purchase.
Exact retained chisel/groover selections and manufacturer distinctions between hole profiles, spacing conventions and package architecture; no stitch performance inferred.
