Match Setters to Rivets, Snaps and Eyelets

Start with the fastener, not the word rivet

A double-cap rivet, a solid copper rivet with a burr, a snap and a rolled eyelet are different fastening systems. The visible head diameter, the shank or post diameter, its usable length and the setter recess are separate dimensions. A similar number on two tools is not a compatibility chart.

Choose hardware for the actual assembly, then choose the tool and lower support matched to that system. A hole punch creates an opening; a setter forms or seats the fastener. An anvil or base supplies the lower support. A kit may include some of these pieces without supplying all of them, and a consumable count does not establish how many complete closures or tools are included.

A broad bench kit still has a defined boundary

The Craftool Deluxe 8105-00 supplies six pieces including multiple setters and an anvil base. The selected listing names Segma snaps, Line 20/24 snaps, Rapid Rivets, Double Cap Rivets up to 11 mm and Brooklyn rivet/post hardware. That is useful breadth when your planned hardware is among the named systems.

The exact Tandy manufacturer reference also excludes rivets with burrs, domed rivets, wide double-cap rivets and solid-brass or stainless-steel line snaps. The name Snap-All therefore does not make it universal. The listing calls for pre-punched holes and a non-metal mallet; a punch, a mallet and a fastener assortment are not made part of the six-piece allocation merely by being needed for the job.

For rivets with burrs, compare the exact tool and shank row

C.S. Osborne’s 170-9 is a dedicated copper-rivet/burr setter rather than an extension of the Tandy snap kit. The exact manufacturer row pairs a 0.171-inch setter-hole diameter with a No.9 copper rivet shank of 0.161 inch. Those two measurements are intentionally attached to different parts: the tool hole is not the same thing as the rivet shank.

That row is a precise model example, not a universal No.9 table for every brand or rivet family. The manufacturer describes forged steel with a hardened working end and polished face, but its row does not prove that rivets, burrs, cutting tools or an anvil are included with the selected Amazon tool. The listed tool weights also differ, so weight is not used here to choose between setting systems.

Eyelet tooling and miniature recesses need different checks

HolsterSmith HRSK8 supplies a base and ram for #8, quarter-inch roll-design eyelets. This selection is the tool-only package, not its tool-plus-eyelets bundle or a #6/#8 combination. The eyelet’s post length must still suit the assembled layers; a diameter label alone does not establish the binding thickness.

FINGERINSPIRE’s four hand setters are instead described by inner recess sizes of 4, 4.9, 5 and 6 mm. Each tool is 100 mm long, with corresponding outside heads of 6, 6, 7 and 8 mm. Those measured recesses help check a small head shape, but they do not prove fit to an unrelated snap or eyelet system. No anvil or consumable assortment is named as supplied. A dedicated eyelet system offers a different kind of fit evidence from four recess measurements.

A tool-and-hardware kit is convenient when its dimensions suit the design

Shenyudora supplies press pliers with interchangeable dies, 160 double-cap rivet sets and 40 snap sets. The rivets have 10 mm caps with 6 or 8 mm posts, in four colors, with twenty sets per size/color combination. The snaps have 15 mm caps, ten sets per color. Each snap set has a socket, stud, base and cap, so count complete closures separately from their components.

Choose that package when the supplied dimensions and setting format fit the project, rather than expecting every future refill to fit the dies. No external die-thread or replacement-fastener compatibility list is supplied, and the hardware material grades are not clearly allocated. Post height is an assembly choice, not a guaranteed leather-thickness capacity. Buying the correct hardware family and matched tooling matters more than the largest advertised piece count.

Questions before choosing

Will the Deluxe Snap-All set install copper rivets with burrs?

No. Tandy’s exact 8105-00 manufacturer reference excludes rivets with burrs. The Osborne 170-9 is a different, dedicated system example.

Why are 0.171 and 0.161 inches both listed for the Osborne example?

They describe different parts: the 170-9 setter hole and the specified No.9 copper-rivet shank respectively. They are not conflicting measurements of one part.

Does the HolsterSmith #8 tool include a supply of eyelets?

Not in this selected tool-only version. It supplies a base and ram; the eyelet bundles are separate selections.

Can I choose a rivet post from the cap diameter?

No. Cap diameter describes the visible head. Post length and the actual assembly must be considered separately with the fastener’s fit instructions.
