LEATHERWORKING TOOLS
Choose Leather Stamps and Carving Tools
Choose the kind of detail before the number of tools
A swivel knife cuts a line, a stamp applies its own face shape, and a modeling tool works on detail by its point, spoon or rounded form. A border guide references the leather edge rather than supplying a decorative motif. These roles can complement one another, but buying more sizes of one face will not automatically add the missing role.
The Craft Guy starter package illustrates the count clearly: one swivel knife, six stamps and a small screwdriver make eight pieces. The six stamp roles are smooth beveler, pear shader, seeder, camouflage, veiner and backgrounder. Choose it for that variety rather than assuming eight stamps or a complete bench setup. No maul or work surface is named in its contents.
Compare a complete swivel knife by its grip and blade selection
OWDEN’s Medium knife has an 11.5 mm brass barrel, adjustable handle height and two heat-treated stainless-steel blades at 8 and 10 mm width, plus a hex key. The barrel diameter describes the grip; the blade widths describe different cutting edges. This is a useful complete-tool comparison when you want a general/detail blade choice without buying another handle.
A replacement blade needs a matching holder. Tandy’s official Craftool steel and ceramic blade pages list named compatible knife families; that evidence does not establish fit with every other brand. Similarly, OWDEN’s stated 5.5 mm blade-end interface is one measurement to check, not a complete universal fit claim. Choose the exact profile and fastening arrangement rather than matching only a diameter or the word swivel.
Buy face sizes when one decorative role is already useful
VJEWEBLU’s smooth-angle set supplies four complete 95 mm tools with head dimensions of 6 × 6, 6 × 4, 6 × 3 and 6 × 1 mm. It is a focused choice for several scales of beveling impression. Those are face dimensions, not leather-thickness capacities, and the tools are decorative stamps rather than edge-shaving bevelers.
The material is described as single-piece 304 stainless steel. That fact is useful for construction comparison, but it does not establish a numerical head angle or permission to use any hammer. Choose a striking tool and support according to the actual stamp instructions. Adding another set with the same measured faces is not a new functional choice unless a different working geometry is genuinely established.
For shaping and borders, choose the actual contact form
LQ Industrial’s three modeling tools are approximately 16 cm long and combine stainless steel and rubber, with point/stylus, spoon and ball forms named across the set. They suit comparison for pattern positioning, line impressions and small shaping details. Exact tip diameters are not supplied, so a ball or spoon radius cannot be selected from the overall length. Tandy’s modeling guidance likewise distinguishes spoon, ball, undercut and stylus roles instead of treating every tip as a stamp.
Craftool 3204-00 takes a different approach: an adjustable edge-referenced border guide, with a stated offset of 1/16 to 1½ inches and compatibility named for standard 3/8-inch swivel-knife blades. The offset and blade size are separate measurements. Confirm whether a blade is supplied before relying on it as a complete cutting setup. Choose the guide for a border distance, the modeling set for shaping/marking, and the face set for its specific impressions.
Plan the supporting pieces without inventing a technique
Weaver describes its stone slab as support for tooling, stamping and carving. For cutting or punching over the slab it specifies a protective Poundo or cutting board above the stone. That separates the firm supporting layer from the surface in contact with an edge. It is not an instruction to cut against bare stone.
No single preparation, striking force or sharpening angle is established by a mixed decorative-tool kit. Use the instructions for the exact knife, stamp or attachment when beginning work. A modeling spoon is not a striking tool, and a polished finish does not give an unknown stamp a universal impact rating.
Questions before choosing
Does an eight-piece starter kit mean eight stamp designs?
Not for The Craft Guy selection. It contains six stamps, one swivel knife and one small screwdriver.
Is an 11.5 mm OWDEN handle a blade-width specification?
No. The Medium barrel is 11.5 mm in diameter; the supplied blade widths are 8 and 10 mm.
What do the four VJEWEBLU dimensions measure?
They are the stamp-head dimensions: 6 × 6, 6 × 4, 6 × 3 and 6 × 1 mm. Overall tool length is 95 mm.
Can the Craftool border guide replace a pattern stamp?
It supplies an adjustable edge offset for a compatible blade, not a decorative stamp face. Choose by whether the project needs a guided border line or an impressed motif.
