LEATHERWORKING TOOLS
Plan a Bench for Cutting, Punching and Hand Stitching
Give each surface a job before choosing its dimensions
The surface touching a cutting edge or punch is not necessarily the firm base beneath it. Weaver describes its poly cutting board for cutting and punching, and its current granite slab for tooling, stamping, carving and hardware support. For cutting or punching over the stone, the maker describes a Poundo or cutting board above it. This is a layered setup, not permission to cut directly against bare stone.
The selected Weaver slab is 6 × 6 × 1½ inches. Its square footprint is a useful comparison with a long narrow backing block, especially when deciding where a firm support will sit beneath the work. The stone is described as both granite and marble, so confirm the selected material if that distinction matters to your choice; its dimensions and under-board support role are the consistent buying information.
Match the working area and the layer that touches the tool
MDLUU’s polypropylene block is listed at 7.8 × 3.1 × 0.9 inches, with cutting and punch/chisel backing uses. It provides a compact rectangular contact area; the larger shipping-package dimensions do not enlarge that working surface. Check the area needed around the actual work rather than buying only by thickness.
The seller also describes the block beneath a quartz slab for damping stamping vibration. That is a stated arrangement for this model, not a force rating or a promise of silence. No hammer or stamping tool is included. Similarly, the thickness or mass of a stone or plastic block does not establish a heat rating, impact-force limit or permission to use an unrelated material as the tool-contact layer.
Choose a sewing position and mounting arrangement separately
LUNARM Set B uses a long sit-on base, and its vise section can be positioned. It combines the pony with a sewing assortment. That is a different setup from assuming every pony clamps to an arbitrary table edge. Compare the position in which you actually sew, the space for the base and the supplies already in your kit.
DigNew’s dual-base model instead specifies a quick screw clamp, a 40 mm jaw opening, up to 180-degree tabletop adjustment and up to 120-degree long-base adjustment. The jaw opening describes the gap between the jaws; it is not a universal maximum leather-panel size or an unlimited holding-force claim. No universal bench-edge thickness fit is established. Confirm the actual mounting arrangement against your table and how the work must be oriented.
Keep layout reach separate from cutting and punching
Weaver’s nominal eight-inch wing divider is described for measuring, scoring, spacing, arcs and border marking. A screw with a self-seating washer and nut adjusts the setting, and the leg points are hardened. This is a useful addition when you need to transfer a distance or establish positions before another operation.
The divider does not punch the marked holes or supply a cutting blade. A border guide or a punch solves a different next step. Give layout room to the actual piece and leave space for its support, rather than treating an overall tool length as the area available to work on. No measuring graduations or complete steel grade should be assumed from the divider’s eight-inch designation.
Choose a striking face that the receiving tool permits
WUTA’s selected rawhide mallet has a 42 mm face, a shellac-impregnated rolled rawhide head and a hickory handle. It is one mallet; 48 mm is another selection. The stated face diameter, 295 g item weight and complete-tool dimensions answer different buying questions. They should not be substituted for each other.
The face material is the practical comparison with a polished steel hammer or a different maul. Follow the actual receiving tool’s requirement: for example, the reviewed Tandy Deluxe listing calls for a non-metal mallet. That does not make any one mallet universally correct for every punch or stamp. Keep the source instructions with the tool and plan the supporting surface as part of the same operation, without inventing an impact or load capacity from a solid-looking bench block.
Questions before choosing
Can I cut leather directly on a tooling stone because the page calls it a cutting board?
The reviewed Weaver guidance describes a Poundo or cutting board above the stone for cutting or punching. The firm slab and the edge-contact layer have different jobs.
How large is the MDLUU working block?
The stated block dimensions are 7.8 × 3.1 × 0.9 inches. Its 8.2 × 3.1 × 1.3 inch package dimensions are not the working size.
Does a 40 mm jaw opening mean the DigNew pony only holds 40 mm wide projects?
No. The opening describes the jaw gap, not the overall panel width. The project’s position and the actual jaw/mounting arrangement need their own check.
Will every stitching pony fit my bench?
No universal fit is established. LUNARM’s sit-on base and DigNew’s dual-base arrangement are different; confirm the chosen mounting and available space for your table.
